Designing Portable Displays For Marketing Theater Merchandise
Many theaters increase their revenue stream by selling branded merchandise at intermission and after the performance. Yet many of the production houses don't want to install permanent, fixed merchandising counters branded for that particular play or musical. Instead of a costly and cumbersome style of exhibit, many theaters are choosing to use portable displays instead.
Advantages Of Portable Displays
Portable exhibits are designed to be mobile. As part of their very nature, they are able to be moved easily. This type of setup has many benefits for a theater company. The first is that the exhibit could include a kiosk, which can be located in the lobby in the midst of the crowd at the beginning of the evening, but moved out of the way once no longer needed. Many theaters have used such a booth to great effect for selling souvenir programs.
Larger trade show displays have similarly excellent results for merchandise. If a production is particularly famous or successful, the amount of merchandise it sells is likely to increase. It can quickly outgrow the capacity of the theater's refreshment stand and move into its own area. A mobile booth can be an excellent option precisely because it can be disassembled and taken with a traveling company or stored flat if the company isn't on the road.
Basics Of Trade Show Displays For Theaters
The biggest advantage of owning an exhibit for a theater is that they can be made customizable very easily. A good company can produce an exhibit that can have its panels removed and replaced with new ones, but leave the frame untouched. In essence, the most expensive part of the displays for a trade show need only be purchased once. The inexpensive parts can change with the production, allowing for more flexibility than if the theater tried to build a new booth for every production.
Using A Booth While On Tour
When a company tours, packing quickly and efficiently is top priority. Touring companies often have the greatest success selling merchandise, as they are able to escape the glut of theater products that often exists in major cities and bring great productions to less common areas. People there naturally want memorabilia, yet packing a standard booth may be prohibitively space consuming. Such a company could benefit from packable displays for a trade show. They can be designed to use as little space as possible, as companies would want to ship them even if used for an exhibition. As a result, a tour can sell its merchandise easily from the same booth without having to worry about too much of a shipping hassle.
Making The Sale From Displays For A Trade Show
In many ways, the requirements for a good merchandise booth are similar to the needs of good exhibits. They need to be eye catching and easy to find above the crowd's head. With a bit of planning and creativity, any theater company can leverage mobile exhibits to work for their merchandising advantage.

1) Do souvenir programmes exist for GREASE (I have seen the old Grease, not the new revival, so if there's one for the old Grease I'd prefer it), and THE PRODUCERS?

I know that there is one for both the Producers and Grease (you will want the one from 1972). These can both be found on ebay.com. The Producers one seems to go for around $7 and the Grease goes for about $3.
