The Boy Who will always Live
He brought us hope, peace, excitement, joy, pain and most importantly, he made us replay of memories of friends long lost. He made sure of one thing, that whenever we read his story we revisit our childhood. The boy who J K Rowling's imagination gave birth to is a boy who will always live in the hearts of all those who have felt the power of his character. Harry Potter will always live. Harry Potter better known as the-boy-who-lived will never fade away... never.
For me, however Harry holds special meaning. I was 11 when I read the first magical book by Rowling that introduced me to Harry, the poorly treated boy with a wonderous gift of magic. I had no idea I would grow up to be a huge admirer of this little boy who once set a snake on his cousin brother. Then I turned 12 years old and the first book was almost fading out of my memory, when all the literal characters were given faces, I would always associate with while reading the rest of the books about Harry. As I watched Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone I felt the bonds of friendship touching me and I knew I wanted friends just like Ron and Hermione.
Then came the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the relating factor was that Harry to had grown a year just like me, it just inhanced the realism in Harry's character. I was genuinely sad when Harry was sad, and genuinely happy when he was happy. I was among the millions of fans who sielently prayed for his well being as he faced perils. All that I had imagined while reading the book, was brought out in the movie with justified perfection.
I was in class eight when I started reading the third bookHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the one which narrated the events of his third year at Hogwarts. I remember flipping through the book between classes, I could just not resist it, as if J K Rowling had enchanted each page of the book as well. I also remember watching the film with my friends afterwards… and then after wards having a spell fight using pencil-turned-wands.
Then I turned 14 and so did Harry and we both had the most hard year of our lives. he fought a dragon( I remember not sleeping a whole night just to read the outcome of the first task), turned into a fish and prepared to face his worst fear as he brought He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named back into a visible life, while I too prepared myself for my worst nightmare- class 10 Boards. The next year was again a year of exams for both Harry and I as I gave my Tenth Board Exams without a hitch, Harry gave his O.W.L's with more than just a hitch. I think I did my exams better than him after all neither was the police after me nor did my friends forsake me. For me the fifth movie was a disappointment because of the lack of quiditch and an out of my imagination representation of the Ministry Of Magic.
Then Harry started with his sixth year at Hogwarts as I started with my 11th grade…and it hit me that Harry and I had practically grown up together and that he had been my best literary buddy throughout my childhood and now as he prepared himself for the end, I prepared myself for the ‘end' ..the end of childhood, school life and a friend I had looked forward to meeting year after year. I was in class 12 when I read the seventh and the last Harry Potter book, it was hard digesting that I would never be able to experience another game of quiditch or any other spell. I would'nt be able to feel the same rush I felt as I held an unread Harry Potter book. I saw the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in the cinema this time with my family… it was a different experience. A nice one , as if I had taken them to meet my friend.
Although the last book of the Harry Potter series is the best one and I have read it almost eight to nine times I somehow don't want the last movie to come out…and if it does I don't want to see it so that I know that there is still hope, hope that I will not loose my childhood friend. I will know he is there only I did'nt go to meet him this time. I feel the movie will end it…it will end the little fragment of childhood that we see reflecting back through Harry. Its like whenever I see the first part of Harry Potter I can't help but notice how small Harry, Ron, and Hermione were, which automatically makes me recall the time when I was as small as them, at the time I saw this movie and related to it because we were all of the same age. The same thing happens when I see the rest of the movies. Some how with the last movie coming out, its like not only the end of Harry Potter but also the end of the childish games and anxiety and memories it was attached to. What if after a couple of years when our generation is replaced with younger and more peepier ones Harry Potter is regarded as yet another book which kids use to read…perhaps kids will treat is in the same way we treat shakespear!!!!... For me the boy-who-lived is no longer a past tense phrase, Harry Potter is the boy who will always live in the hearts of millions of those who revisit their childhood memories and friends on reading about him. The best part is that the books will be a constant reminder of the existence and the reality of all the childhood experiences we all went through, we could revisit our old friend just by opening these books in which it seems JK Rowling has pored out her life metamorphically to create a character we all can associate with. Obviously my wanting the movie not to be released will not alter its release on the 15th of July,2011 but personally I don't plan to watch it so that atleast for me Harry never dies out...and with him I can just hope that my childlishness also stays intact. I along with millions others love you Harry and we are really going to miss you, and God bless you J K Rowling, and so Harry Potter you will be the boy-who-will-always-live…
