Pride and Prejudice
Pride and prejudice is novel that was written by Jane Austen and first published in 1813. It was her second novel and she started working on it in 1796. The novel was first titles First Impression, but never got attention of publishers under the title until she revised her manuscript and entitled it Pride and Prejudice. She settled for formula of antithesis and alliteration for the title perhaps to capture reader's attention of the contents. The novel is set in English countryside and describes life during 1800s (Deidre 37). The novel is set around Bennet family that is made up of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five children. The novel is a critique of the society at the time that operated under strict laws depicted by social class. The society required that all properties had to be left oldest male heir. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet did not have a son which means the family properties had to be inherited by Mr. Willian Collins and Bennet women would be left without a home. In order to secure a good future for her daughters, Mrs. Bennet makes effort to have all her daughters marry wealthy husbands (Fiona). However, her efforts are faced by many obstacles that unveil a society that is ruled by pride and prejudice. The novel is a story constructed around passionate romance, extraordinary accomplishments, marvelous revelation of life through experience, and a society that is in evolution. Two centuries after it was published, the novel still remains enduring favorite to many people. It is as love story of excellence, a fiction of love, poetry flowing in prose, and full of wisdom.
Characters
The main characters in the novel include the Bennet family. They include (Fiona):
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet who have five daughters Jane, Elizabeth, Lydia, Catherine, and Mary
Elizabeth Bennet is the second daughter in Bennet family. She is the main character and the protagonist of the novel and she shows that marriage should be based on love not money. Through her, the author presents other unfolding plot and characters. She is presented as intelligent, lively, attractive, and a bit witty. She appears selective on the bases of making her decisions. She marries Darcy.
Jane is the oldest daughter, beautiful and she married Charles Bingley. The author presents her with contrasting character to that of Elizabeth as she is presented to be sweeter, shyer, and sensible but not as clever. She is presented as virtuous character who only wants to see good in other people.
Catherine and Mary were also daughters of Bennet family. Mary Bennet appears to be the only plain daughter of the family. She is the third daughter of the family. She works hard to gain knowledge and accomplishments but she does not achieve them. At one time, she embarrasses the family for singing badly. On the other hand, Catherine or "Kitty" is the fourth daughter and only aged seventeen years. She is presented as less headstrong and same character with Lydia.
Lydia was the youngest daughter who goes against social norms and run off with George Wickham without marriage. She is portrayed as frivolous and headstrong. She likes socializing and flirting with military officers. She dominates Catherine and she gets a lot of support from her mother. She does not show any remorse after embarrassing her family by running away with George but rather she shows that she had achieved a match which her sisters ought to be jealous of.
Darcy is a wealthy gentleman who marries Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy is the main male character in the novel and own family estate at Derbyshire. He is handsome, tall, and intelligent. However, he bears characters like moral rectitude and prejudice which are perceived to be excessive pride by other people in the society. He accomplishes the theme of transformation when he changes his view of others in the society.
Bingley is a wealthy bachelor who has good connection and marries Jane. He is presented as wealthy and recent. Although he is wealthy and handsome like Darcy, he is contrasted to Darcy by being less intelligent but more charming to strangers.
Caroline Bingley is sister to Bingley and tries her best to separate Elizabeth and Darcy, and Jane and Charles. Caroline believes marriage should be based on money and not on love.
William Collins is a cousin to Mr. Bennet and moves into Bennet family to inherit their estate. He marries Charlotte Lucas. He is presented as insensible man who has been little assisted by society and education.
Lady Catherine De Bourgh is Darcy's aunt. She is presented as proud and controlling to her nephew. She is wealthy and high social standing. She is domineering and condescending. She is respected but not intimidated by the rest of the society. However, Darcy feels offend by her manners towards his lover Elizabeth and he later asserts to her that he had the right to decide who to marry, when she is opposed to his marriage to Elizabeth.
Plot summary
The novel opens will arrival of Mr. Bingley, who is a wealthy gentleman. He arrives accompanied by his fashionable sisters and Mr. Darcy. Mr. Bingley is well received by the society but Mr. Darcy has acquaintance with local people. Bingley and Jane grow a close relationship which is not approved by Mrs. Bennet. At the same time, Elizabeth is rejected by Darcy at a local dance and she matches his coldness with her wit. Elizabeth grows a close relationship with Mr. Wichham who tells her that she has been mistreated by Darcy and she hates Darcy more. However, Darcy is drawn to Elizabeth. On verge of their marriage proposal, Bingley leaves Netherfield and leaves Jane upset and confused although Bingley sister plays a role in the affair. Mr. Collins, Bennet cousin, then enters the scene. He is an ordained clergyman who is employed by Lady Catherine de Bourgh. He has come to Bennet family to look for a wife among the girls. However, he is rejected by Jane as she is engaged to Bingley and also Elizabeth rejects his marriage proposal.
