Tips to Sell Your Digital Photos Online Successfully:
To sell your digital photos online successfully you need to become a great ‘photographer.' Your images have to be ‘great stock photographs' and shot in a high resolution format. If you get all that together, how do you then increase the saleability of your photos?
Great Stock Photographs:
First thing is, you must learn how to take great stock photographs. ‘Stock photos' are images that can be licensed for specific uses. These photos are extremely popular with graphic artists, art directors, designers, marketing professionals, advertising agencies, websites, magazine ads, and marketing brochures (the persons who will buy them). These agencies used to hire professional photographers to create images, but in this modern day they will license an image off a photo website and the photographer gets paid a commission. I will point out some of the basic points you need to know about.
No Tourist-type Photos:
Tourist-like photos or your everyday snapshots will not sell well, if at all. To sell your digital photos they need to be as professional as possible, in demand commercially, and desireable quality for art directors or designers to like them. As soon as possible you need to research ‘what is selling' on different websites. You can sign up at several sites first, then browse the site, ask questions, send emails to specific artists you find a contact to. You should browse professional sites such as Comstock, Corbis, and Getty Images to learn what type of photos sell best.
No Background Noise Allowed:
Agencies usually rank photos by their quality and their salability potential. It's mandatory to be sure your photos are well lit, crisp, nicely composed, and more importantly free of any ‘background noise' known as ‘digital noise' caused by underexposure, high iso, and over-processing.
No Logos or Business Names:
it is very important none of your images contain any company trademarks, logos, brands, or third-party images. No photo website, nor any buyers want to be bothered with a slight chance of infringing on another company's logo or name or trademark. That is vitally important.
Get a "Model Release":
it is crucial that you obtain, then provide a ‘model release' for any person that can be recognized in your photo. Every agency will have its' own ‘model release form' for you to have to fill out. You must send it with every image that has a recognizable person in it. I found one I like and just send the same form to all agencies without a problem.
Photo Agencies, Choosing the Right One:
It's advisable to register with several online photo websites to have a look around. Although there are similarities, some offer more services and better support than others to help you sell your digital phtos online. Research the types of images in stock, to determine if your photos are comparable with the same quality and style. See how many visitors or how many times each image has been bought and downloaded. It's a good idea to join the community forum on the agency website, most sites have one. Be sure to inquire of other members how their experience in selling rates and the site support. [Take good notes]. You need to determine if it's feasible for you to sell your photos on that site also before you commit the time to it.
Whether to Categorize and Keyword them:
Photo sellers can frequently place their image in [more than category]. This is a huge help as it works to get your photos in front of more possible buyers. This is so important because as visitors and new site members browse websites, photo buyers themselves shop by "the category." Making sure your photos get in the right categories, and as many categories as possible, will place them in front of "more eyeballs", which is the name of the game if you want as many sales as possible.
Attaching the right "keywords' to your photos is another important factor to helping buyers find your images to purchase. Photo websites give you a set amount of characters to type in, which you should use to maximum potential. Make your keywords reasonably short and accurate. Don't bother with funky keywords or words that don't apply to a photo. The wrong keywords may slow up the approval process or get your images rejected altogether.
How to Upload your Images
There are three basic ways to upload your images to the photo website. The one most commonly used is the ‘upload form' available on all stock photo agencie websites. A few agencies employ the ActiveX/Java uploading system. The third one is via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software which is probably the easiest way to upload your photos as all one needs to do is ‘drag and drop' the file from your computer screen to their server. Another nice convenience is to schedule your upload at whatever time you want to (I do my uploading at night). One of the best agencies, ( Istockphoto) doesn't have this option, the agency makes you pay to upgrade to the ‘pro version' to have that capability.
You will need to obtain an FTP Client such as CuteFTP and FileZilla for Windows users or Cyberduck for Mac users to enable you to transfer your files. If you go to download.com or tucows.com, you can find a FTP client program, read the user reviews, and download it to your desktop.

The Shutterstock Agency
Shutterstock operates a different model than most other sites. You have to subscribe per a monthly fee, but are allowed to download 750 images if you want that many in the 30 day time period. You will earn .25 cents for every downloaded photo. Uploading your photos is quite easy, they have the 3 main systems described (Activex, FTP,and HTML ). In the community forum you can find a lot of useful info and get questions answered.
The Dreamstime Agency
Since the year 2000 Dreamstime has been online. They operate as a Royalty-Free ‘stock photos' website, to sell CD images. The commission is .50 for every image that is downloaded. Your commission can increase as your photos become more popular and effect more downloads per week. Check out each website and ask questions, take some notes and [compare] payout rates, support, etc.
The 123RF Agency
Inmagine is the parent company who owns 123RF. They have built a strong database of sellers and repeat buyers since starting out in 2000. Prices start at $1 for low-res, $2 for med-res, and $3 for high-res. You can earn 50% of the price for each of your photos that sell. Another way to earn is by getting paid a percentage from the subscription revenue. This is figured by the total amount of your downloaded photos and a percentage of the total revenue for that month.
The BigStockPhoto Agency
In its first 5 years BigStockPhoto built its' database to over 110,000 photos, while adding about 5,000 a week, quite impressive. They claim to be one of the two fastest growing stock photo sites. They feature how-to articles, tutorials, multiple light boxes, and a rapid search engine. Their uploading system is fast and easy. Whenever one of your photos is sold you earn 50 cents. You can earn up to $20 for any special license image sold.
The iStockPhoto Agency
Its been said that microstock was the first online photo agency and may be the biggest today. This probably explains why istock is home for more skilled photographers than most agencies have. Which translates to more competion all around. You will really need to have Pro-looking photos for them to compete and sell well with this agency. It's a great place to visit to learn what the Pro's are shooting.
The Fotolia Agency
The newest stock photo agency may just be the place for new photographers to start out, it's not so crowded. Depending on the type of license the customer buys determines how much commission you will receive. They maintain a local presence in five different countries: the U.K., USA, Germany, France, and Spain. Their ambitious goal is to be in all the English speaking countries and Europe by the end of 2006.

I have lots of personal albums on Webshots. (User - Buffylou) I use their screen saver/wallpaper program on all of my computers. They have millions of wonderful pro and amateur pix, and the site is easy to navigate. I've also been very pleased with photos and albums I've purchased from them.
