Lion and Victorian Themed Door Knockers
Adding a door knocker to your home is a wonderful and simple way to increase the elegance of your front door. The front door is not only the main entrance for most homes (or businesses), it is also serves to represent the home within. Most homeowners will focus most of their attention on the interior design of their home, forgetting that the exterior of a house is the first impression guests will ever have. Remember the old saying "you only have one chance to make a first impression" so a beautiful front door should be a key element in your home design.
Knockers have been is use for hundreds of years, not merely for their decorative qualities but for the practical purpose of alerting homeowners to a visitor's arrival. Although many modern homes will utilize a doorbell (electric or manual) a knocker can be used in addition. Knockers are a more prominent feature on the door, easy to locate and guests can be assured a knocker is in working order. Electric doorbells can break or malfunction and a guest (or homeowner themselves) may not be aware when this happens.
The door knocker can be used to tie together existing patterns on the door or can be a separate and entirely different design. A lion pattern may not work for the actual doorknob but a lion's head knocker is both dramatic and works well on modern and historical homes. The lion is frequently used to represent strength and protection, two important components for most homes. Lion heads traditional feature a lion with a ring clenched between its teeth for guests to use.
If a lion's head knocker is not quite the look you are going for there are a number of other options available. For a classic Victorian theme try utilizing a mythological figure (gods/goddesses), a doctor's doorknocker, or even an ornate pattern that does not depict anything specific. Search for solid brass construction to ensure strength and durability. Solid brass construction also ensures the preservation of fine details within a classic design from an original mould (other metals such as iron will lose these details during the casting process).
If you are adding a new knocker to your door or replacing the original knocker, take careful measurements. If you are reusing existing holes drilled in the door measure the distance between them carefully and search for knockers with a compatible center to center mounting distance. Rear mounted knockers require drilling through the door but are more securely attached and cannot be pulled out or taken off the door easily. If you are unsure about what size knocker to use, try cutting out a square of paper in the size you are considering and tape it to the door to get a visual – if you feel it is too big for your door, go with your instinct. There is no right or wrong size, it is completely up to you.
