My last name is Gallant, and i know for a fact that my ancestors came from France. Has anyone heard of or seen a crest for my family?
There is no such thing as a family crest. A crest is part of a coat of arms. Normally coats of arms do not belong to families but to individuals. In British countries they are granted by the heraldry authority and only belong to individuals, not families. However, I am not certain about France. I think I read once that in France they can belong to families. In Poland they belong to families, dynastic families. In Ireland there are coats of arms that have been granted to individuals and there are clan arms.
You cannot go by a website selling coats of arms(they use the misnomer family crest) to determine if you are entitled to one. It takes research. You need to trace your direct male line to see if you have an ancestor that was granted or assumed a coat of arms. Peddlers selling coats of arms on the internet, at shopping malls, in airports, in magazines etc are scam merchants. In British countries they are granted by the specific heraldry authority. In continental countries they usually are assumed.
But here is the problem. Frequently more than one man with the same surname not all necessarily related were each granted their own coat of arms, all different. No one of those peddlers who sell them will have all of them. They don't need to in order to sell to suckers. The only time they will have more than one associated with the same surname is if more than one man from different national origins were granted or assumed a coat of arms.
