Die Casting Manufacturer – The Die Casting Process
Ever wondered how metal toy soldiers were made or how some items turn up to be shaped as they are? Manufacturers don't mold these shapes like they do for clay pots, instead, the usual process is through die casting. Die casting is a process wherein molten metal is poured under high pressure into a mold cavity to which it similarly takes it shape unless the cavity is provided allowances for the patternmaker to draft, mold or machine the finish product. Alloys that can be used for die casting vary from zinc and copper to magnesium, lead and even tin and pewter. Die casting manufacturers can choose to die cast their alloys through any process most appropriate for the finished product. One of the processes used is by having the metals die cast in high pressure. This is the most common way to die cast many other metal alloys, representing about 50% of all production. The low pressure die cast method, on the other hand is used only about 20% of the time for only special products, yet its usefulness increases within time. Other die cast methods are gravity die casting – which amounts to the remaining percentage of production with only a little less left for recently introduced processes – squeeze die casting and vacuum die casting.

In die casting aluminum, the mold is not always destroyed or used only for the purpose of creating a figure closer to the finished product itself. Die cast models are metal pre-built models that are collectibles.
Once a 1:1 car has been selected to replicate, the manufacturer creates a hand shaped mold of the outside of the car. This mold is duplicated and the duplicate is turned into a hand crafted working model. This model is the one used to create the tooling. Each part of the hand crafted model is precisely measured and a die is made to produce each part. This tooling is often a very expensive process requiring hundreds of hours of machining and is the reason why manufacturers usually produce several variations of each model car.
Once the dies have been cut, a test car is cast and assembled to determine if any changes should be made. If all of the parts fit and work correctly and the textures and shape of the parts are correct, then the die is hardened and ready to mass produce.
Each die is made of at least two parts. These parts are assembled and injected with molten metal under high pressure to produce the casting. Once the casting has cooled, the die is taken apart and the casting is then removed, trimmed of excess material, buffed out, and primed for paint. Once painted, each part of the diecast car is assembled until completion. They are then shipped to the manufacturer and distributed to customers.
