Can sext friends have the best friends? It is a question of advertising the new romantic comedy No Strings Attached - directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher - the answer to that is pretty easy to figure out, anyone who has ever seen a romantic comedy.
Adam (Kutcher) first met Emma (Portman, who also exec produced) when they were teenagers at summer camp. Reacquainted years later, they eventually become close friends. Adam assistant Glee-style television series, and in 1980 the son of sitcom star (Kevin Kline), a goodhearted man hit Emma, who is now a workaholic doctor, and his words are allergic to serious relationships.
They end up having quick one night stand, which gives rise to meet friends to benefit from the organization of the one big rule: do not falling in love. Of course, that "sext friends" deal is just too good to last. So who will blink first? And can their friendship survive it?
Imagine if a well-known chefs such as Wolfgang Puck decided to cook Applebee one night and you just happened to eat there. It could very well be the best meal you've ever been in this Applebee's, but it's still frickin 'Applebee no matter who cooked dinner because it is just the same crappy ingredients. It's about the best analogy that I can do about No Strings Attached as helmed Ivan Reitman, whose skills may be in the coming years, but who is still Head of Ghostbusters, Dave, Twins, Kindergarten Cop and Stripes.
No Strings Attached does not offer much new. It could have very easily been a casual sex comedy from 1980, or Kate Hudson, Dane Cook vehicle, but the chemistry between Portman and Kutcher, and the Court of Reitman's enough to make it moderately entertaining, and "watch if it is a level" sort of way. There are a few chuckles peppered throughout - wires to get a decent support for Kline, Lake Bell, Mindy Kalinga, Greta Gerwig and Jake Johnson - but also has a long, boring stretches and a litany of genre clichés endure.
Although these operators make most of the screen, while others - such as unrecognizable Cary Elwes and a bit haphazard and Ludacris - are wasted. The story is a big trick is simply to reverse the usual rom com dynamic Having a girl is emotionally distant, and the guy is romantic. Otherwise, the film offers very little that has not taken the death of romantic comedies now. It is formulaic fluff piece to enliven a star chemistry.
So lovable as Kutcher's here, it's surprising the acclaimed Portman who steals the show. It will be curious to see if Portman, with Thor, and Your Highness, looming on the horizon, will take place in "Oscar curse", if he wins the best actress this year. He can afford to get rid of one of No Strings Attached, but if he makes more movies like this in the future, then the Black Swan are going to feel great, but a distant memory.
