Maidstone Arts and Film Festival
<!--StartFragment-->Maidstone, the county town of Kent is providing various entertainment throughout 2011 and the Arts and Film Festival is set to be a memorable one with numerous free events to keep the whole family amused. The Festival opens on 4th June and closes on 12th June.
Maidstone's very own artist, Graham Clarke will be performing with his well known youth band where the average age is about 69! This entertaining music act is sure to delight the crowds. He is followed on stage on the opening day by local stand-up comedian Rob Callaghan. The Maidstone Arts and Film Festival is a welcome addition to the calendar of events that Maidstone has to offer during 2011. Kent is also known as the 'Garden of England' and Maidstone is in the centre of the county and is in the process of attracting people to the town by hosting events such as the Maidstone Fringe Festival, Proms in the Park and the Arts and Film Festival.
Here is a look at the myriad of events that will be happening during the Arts and Film Festival;
FREE Family Art Workshops – Saturdays June 11, 18, 25 all drop in from 10.30am-12.30pm at Maidstone Museum, St Faith's St, Maidstone ME14 1LH. Maidstone Visual Arts Network are staging family workshops for the under 12s in Maidstone Museum on Saturdays throughout June/ July. Try your hand at casualty art, bookbinding and textile collage.
Festival Launch Saturday, June 4. 7pm Exchange Studio. FREE EVENT
7pm: The Hazlitt has teamed up with Maidstone Visual Arts Network and the University for the Creative Arts to launch their first ever Maidstone Art Trail around some amazing art works displayed in venues throughout the town including a competition to win cash prizes (runs until July 2). How would I "Evaluate the views of a text and make comparisons with your own interpretation"?
We recently studied the film "Casablanca" and were given a review called "Psychoanalysis and the Classical Hollywood text" (http://www.vincasa.com/indexsigmund1.html).
Bascially, I need to do a review of that review - while including my own interpretation of the film. (The actual instructions are in the question). My contention is "That any potential political statement attempted to be made in Casablanca is completely overshadowed by the tawdry and unneccesarily confusing love-triangle."
The overall contention (I THINK) of the review is: "That the 'star' performances of Bogart and Bergman, the music of Max Steiner, the romantic tensions of the narrative, and even the film's handling of American polticis can be approached through psychoanalytical thought."
I really have NO idea how to go about writing this, should I change my interpretation? If so what interpretation would be easiest to have in order to write about this review?

Hmm, this is a toughie for me for several reasons. First and foremost being that I don't agree at all with your conclusion. But I, the answerer, will have to overcome personal bias.
You need to compare and contrast your view with that of Gabbard and Gabbard. But how can you? You are reviewing the movie. They are not.
You find that, thematically, the movie fails to accomplish one of its goals because it becomes confused when it muddles the other major goal. They are trying, you feel, to send a political message and also tell a love story and because they get so bogged down in the love story the political message is obscured and distracted from.
The authors, though, aren't discussing their review of the movie, they are discussing how and why the movie has struck such a resonant chord with the audience.
If I wanted to stick with your view and compare and contrast it with theirs, I might try this approach:
They examine several elements of the movie (the actors, the music, the deep psychoanalytical archetypes represented by the characters, the contemporary and ingrained national political representations) in order to determine how different schools of psychoanalytical thought might say that that movie strikes such a deep chord with the audiences over the years.
I think in order to compare this with your views you might have to say that in order to examine why the movie resonates so deeply with the audience, you, the reviewer, have to first feel some of that sensation and you do not. the film would first have to work as an engaging entertainment before you could find yourself analyzing why it moved you deeply. Since it fails for at least one member of the modern audience, you, by having a cheap and overly convoluted love story superimposed on a political advocacy movie, it failed to draw you in.
Then you could go ahead and discuss some of this themes. Perhaps reject psychoanalysis as an outdated relic of the past, rejected by modern psychiatry. as for the political statement, you should say what you thought the statement was and you must discuss how it was disconnected in your viewing from the love interest.
You might say whether or not you recognized any more iconic or symbolic meaning to any of the characters or whether you viewed them entirely on their own merits as individuals in a specific story set in a specific time and place.
perhaps you've got an essay on how a movie that might have been meaningful because of shared perspectives of people in the 40's through the early 90's just no longer works for people today because of a change in perspective. there's plenty to work with with your view vs. what the authors' describe as the public's responding to the movie in decades past. I wouldn't try to come up with a different analytic structure to pretend is your view, it won't ring true and you'll probably get it wrong as a result.
