Murder for Hire
A man, down on his luck and in desperate need of money agreed to become a killer-for-hire. His target was a rich, elderly woman and her son promised to pay partial down and the rest when his inheritance came through. But when the time came to do the killing, the hit man chickened out. He tried to explain that he’d thought about it and if he got caught, he would greatly disappoint his wife and children The son was not impressed and through gritted teeth said, “If she is not dead within 24 hours, I’ll hire someone to kill you both.”
Out of fear, the hit man made good on his promise. Unfortunately, he left several witnesses and enough evidence to easily merit his twenty years-to-live sentence. He quickly turned state’s evidence against the man who hired him, lost his wife and children and is this day waiting in prison for conjugal visits that will never come.
There is no doubt that money is the most common reason a person would become a hit-man, but statistically, failed relationships rank highest as the reason they are hired. It’s the unfaithful boyfriend, the wife who just won custody and child support for the children, the business deal gone wrong, or the well kept secret the spouse is about to discover that drives a person to consider murder as an answer. Naturally, a big insurance policy can become an overwhelming temptation.
Finding a hit man is an altogether different matter. Not many know anyone capable of such a thing, although many a man has tried to impress a woman in a bar by claiming to be one. A professional hit man would never expose himself in such a manner. As a matter of fact, some relationships have lasted for years without the wife or girlfriend ever suspecting.
Payments offered to hit men range from thousands of dollars to small quantities of drugs. Occasionally, two people will agree to swap killings with no money at all changing hands. Methods of death, places and times vary depending on specific requests, but one thing remains the same - the murder must occur at a time that allows for an un-contestable alibi and there must be no link between the person doing the hiring and the hit man.
Aside from the occasional bunglers, the amateurs and the professionals, many murder-for-hire cases end up with someone hiring an undercover, albeit very macho looking, FBI agent. The FBI typically works between 70 and 90 murder-for-hire cases a year and currently there at least 10 cases in the US court system. Of course, not all cases are uncovered by the FBI and not all defendants will be found guilty.
Recently a prominent and wealthy Egyptian man was arrested in a murder-for-hire plot in the death of a singer, proving even the rich can get caught and that such cases happen all over the world.
As fascinating as these cases are, it is perplexing to understand how some people became angry or desperate enough to believe the death of another is the only answer to their problems. Considering the risks and the number of people each death affects, the reason for such actions can only be explained as extreme selfishness.
