BROKEN VEILS
When my wife left me, I wouldn’t have admitted to being at fault. I paid the rent regularly, gave her a generous house-keeping allowance and paid for two domestic servants. What more could a woman want? Christiana and I got married just three years ago. We met long before then – in our students’ days in Ghana. I was training to be a doctor; she was training to be an Adult Educator. After I qualified, we moved into her apartment block, which was her father’s. Christiana is from a Nigerian father but her mother belongs to Fante tribe in Ghana. She was born and bred in the old Gold Coast. When the going was tough for Ghanaians, her father moved her, together with other members of his family down to Nigeria. Nigeria at that time was perfectly okay, in the early eighties, when United States Dollar could be exchanged for eighty Nigeria Kobo. In one of our discussions, she told me that she together with her siblings returned to Ghana where they sensed cookies is about to crumble in Nigeria, when Ali Baba and the forty thieves found their ways into Nigeria politics. After all, her family is like bat, who could claim either bird or animal. Ghana is nothing but her second home. Her father had made fortunes there as an honest medical practitioner and a businessman.
I got a job that paid fairly well and my wife – fiancée then got a job with one of the Non-governmental Organizations that caters for adult literacy. Money was, therefore, no problem and we decided to buy all things we would need for our home which we hoped to set up when we came home. We were very much in love in those years of planning and dreaming together. I was only thirty and she was just twenty- four. We set a target that as soon as I turned thirty- two, we would got all things we wanted for our home, we even put some money in the bank for when we decide to come on holidays. Despite the fact that I had to do a year of National Youth Service, Christiana and I got married straight away. Her father owns a chain of successful clinics and she worked in one of them as an Administrative and Personal Manager. Luckily, I was deployed to Ile-Ife at the Obafemi Awolowo University Health Centre, and, in the evening, I did part-time duties for my Father-in Law and he was very generous in what he paid me.
After my youth service, I got a better job with New Hope specialist Hospital along Mayfair Avenue, and still continued with my private practice. My wife unfortunately was not pregnant yet. That did not bother me as pregnancy is not what you order for any time you want it. But it bothered Christiana. A series of medical tests have proved there was nothing wrong with both of us. All she had to do, the doctors advised her, was to relax.
“Madam, you’ve to relax. There is no qualm. Thanks God, your husband is not novice in this business” Dr. Elnorf said in one of our visit to his hospital. Dr, Elnorf is a person I could dole my hat for. I respect him not because he is senior fellow in my group, but because he is a gynecologist of gynecologists. Christiana replied “I know all is well” She smiled. Within me, I know her smiling is lipstick smile. It never reaches her mind. She is highly disturbed.
When he younger sister announced she was pregnant, you don’t need a microscope to see the envious look on my wife’s face and my heart went out to her. She started reading more books on pregnancy, started fussing over a thermometer and anytime I wanted to make love, she always pleaded I should wait until she was ovulating. She scolded me when she thought I drank too mush because according to her, alcohol was bad for the sperm. How ridiculous can you get? I used to pity her condition. What pained me most is my family down at my village. Parents from Western Nigeria are crazy for grandchildren. I know very soon they might invite me to take another way since my wife could not conceive. I could recall one of my visit to my mother, despite the fact she is educated, a school principal for that matter. She announced to me that Lawrence, my old school mate is not a father of twins. “Don’t forget to say hello to Lawrence. His wife has just delivered a set of twins”. The way and manner she presented herself, I knew she was just trying to remind me I have to buckle up.
In the end I stated getting irritated by her wanting to get pregnant. Whenever we made love, she would quickly push me off her and prop her bottom with a pillow so that my semen wouldn’t drip out. Naturally, I started thinking she was more interested in having a baby than she was in me. And I got furious. Inevitably, I started dating again. I meet a lot of girls in the clinics I work for and finding dates was no problem.
Two year ago, I Jessica, she was more than a casual affair to me –I was in love with her and she loved and needed me. She was a final year student studying Microbiology then and little things I did for her pleased her. If I give her money, no matter how little, you could see she appreciated it. She bought me little present too and when we made love, her heart was always in it. When Jessica got pregnant, I thought she would naturally want to get rid of it. I still felt then that I owed my wife a duty and would not want to hurt her by bringing a baby. She couldn’t have into our home. Jessica knew about her and she assured me she would never think of causing trouble between us. But she absolutely refused to get rid of the baby because she wanted it. “Fred, I wish I could do away with this”.
But this means a lot to me”.

I’ll never disturb your wife. I …”
I could see traces of tears on her face. There was perfect silence like that of Christ before Pilate, when she started telling me about herself. Well, what could I do short of anaesthetizing her and forcing the unborn child out of her womb?
Jessica bore me a son- a very good-looking chap and father-pride goaded me into inviting a few of my close friends to my son’s naming ceremony. What I did not realize is that you just can’t hide the birth of a baby. You can, maybe, hide an affair but you can’t easily deny the existence of a baby, not in the Southern Nigeria. One of the friends who were present at the naming ceremony told his wife, who in turn told Christiana. The moment I walked into our flat that fateful day and I saw my wife, I knew instinctively that she knew. Her pitiful body, wracked with sobs. She flung on the bed. When she saw me, she flung herself at me, biting, scratching and weeping as if her heart would break.
“Fred, I never deserve this. What’ve I done to deserve this? I love you when you’re nobody. I love you when the going was tough for you. Why don’t you love me when my own going is tough?”
- I suffered with her too. But what could I say to her that it was my entire fault? Or that Jessica was a mistake. She refused to talk to me for days. When she’d calmed down sufficiently for us to talk about it. She begged that I should have nothing to do with Jessica again. Of course that was impossible and I told her that. When she asked if I did not think Jessica would mind us having her baby, I became impatient with her. “Do you think she is a call-girl? She is from a decent home like yourself, only that from a humble parent”. Jessica loved me, I remind her. She wasn’t a casual fling.
My wife withdrew rapidly into her shell. Nothing interested her anymore. She wasn’t even enthusiastic about love-making – ovulating or nor. She questioned my movements, she didn’t care what I did with myself and whenever I persuaded her to go out, the things she wore were always embarrassing to me. In the end I just left her alone and concentrated on Jessica who got pregnant again. When I told my wife about it, she just nodded and said it was to be expected, considering the fact she couldn’t have babies herself.
Four weeks later, she said it would be better if we were divorced. I was greatly relieved, believed me; somewhere in the last three years, I’d host the love we once shared. I moved out of her father’s apartment along Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Road 7 into the one I rented for Jessica. What baffled me most was that Jessica did not see my coming to her as a victory. “I wish we could settle your matter once and for all.” She said. In fact, it was her who let me know how vulnerable a woman in Christiana’s position could be. “You could have tried to be more patient with her” Jessica chided me. “There are very few women who can laugh and be happy when friends and relatives around her are having babies she couldn’t have” he concluded. The fact that nothing was medically wrong with me wife would even make her more anxious.
I still feel guilty about what happened. But lately, I learnt my wife is going out again with a man I know to be responsible. I desperately want her to be happy and when she is, my guilty feelings would disappear.
At the moment, we are just separated, not divorced. But we’ll soon be. Jessica gave me another son, whom I’m proud of all the same. I’m reasonably happy and will be happier if Christiana became pregnant by whoever eventually mates her… however, the cookies had been crumble.
